Steven Best

Dr. Steven Best

Steven Best is a tenured professor and the former chair of the philosophy department at the University of Texas at El Paso. Emerging as the "establishment" standard-bearer of the radical animal-rights fringe, Professor Best openly supports the terrorism practiced by the Animal Liberation Front (ALF). Working to lend academic legitimacy to terrorist lunacy with Marxist ideals, he co-founded the misanthropic Center on Animal Liberation Affairs (CALA). Best encourages students to "book a classroom to allow a former ALF prisoner to speak." He makes the claim that the ALF represents "the dawn of a new civil war" -- and he ought to know. Speaking on the "ShowTime" cable TV production with Penn & Teller, Best told the national audience, "I don't even think it's controversial to support the ALF. I don't see what the big controversy is."

He openly admits supporting the ALF... supporting a Terrorist group... supporting Terrorism... supporting a group that openly advocates such tactics as arson, destruction of private property, and threats of violence... and you "don't see what the big controversy is." Can you believe this professor has the job of teaching? What Marxist philosophy is he teaching?

  • "We will break the law and destroy property until we win."
-- Steven Best, International Animal Rights Gathering 2005

  • "If I defend rights of animals, if I defend animal liberation, if I defend tactics necessary to bring about what is just and what is right, I am guilty. Guilty as charged."
-- Steven Best on air interview with KVIA-TV ABC-7, El Paso, TX 03 October, 2005

To paraphrase, "If I defend the tactics necessary to bring about what I want regardless of who is hurt, then I am guilty." Was that not the attitude of the 9-11 terrorists? These people are no different from any other terrorists, be it Osama Bin Ladin or the Oklahoma City Bombers, namely Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols - and YES, we do consider Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols Terrorists!

This is what our tax dollars are financing at the University of Texas. Is this what passes for a college education in this day and age? It does make you question what is actually being taught in the classroom. It certainly is not "Ethics" or "Morality".

Look at what these people consider justifications for violence. Referring to Dr. Jerry Vlasak from the Animal Defense League, here is an excerpt from a paper written by Steven Best for the North American Animal Liberation Press Office entitled "Who Is Afraid of Jerry Vlasak". This paper has since been removed from the NAAPLO website.

"Vlasak has defended the use of violence on two grounds. On moral grounds, he believes that any tactics - ranging from threats and break-ins to sabotage and even assault or murder - are legitimate given the suffering exploiters inflict on animals, the impossibility of ending their misery through legal systems that cater to exploitation industries and define animals as property, and the moral imperative to save animals from the violent clutches of exploiters. On pragmatic grounds, Vlasak believes that the use of violence would be an effective intimidation tactic and would stop numerous individuals from exploiting animals while preventing others from ever embarking on that heinous path."

If you think we are making this up, you are wrong. This attempt to legitimize these violent actions was written by Steven Best.
